This kind of one-plus-one contract strategy was employed by both LeBron James and Kevin Durant in recent years. It provides stars total flexibility year to year, with a safety net in case of serious injury. Davis may also be looking to ensure he doesn't get left behind if LeBron decides to leave the Lakers once his deal has ended. Regardless of his reasoning, Davis will get whatever he wants from the Lakers for years to come.
