The long-awaited All-Star break is nearly upon us. At last, we can finally take our foot off the gas and relax a while.
NO! Don’t merely coast through the break!
Instead of forgetting about your teams for a few days, use the break to get ahead of your competition. You can position your teams for a strong second “half” by dropping some slackers off your roster via trade or the waiver wire. I have four player recommendations to target on your wire, one of which is poised to help your teams immediately after the break. Let’s go!
* Note: Although all listed roster percentages are from Yahoo, at the time of the writing of this article, most of our waiver wire recommendations are widely available across all major platforms. *
Dylan Crews – OF – Nationals – 33%
When I first recommended Dylan Crews two weeks ago, it was because he was improving quickly after a very sluggish start to the season. I now have an additional reason to consider adding him to fantasy teams.
The former No. 2 overall pick in the MLB draft has a nearly immaculate schedule after the All-Star break. The Nationals open the second half with a series at the A’s followed by a series at the Rockies. Not only is that six games in the best two stadiums for hitters, but Crews will be facing two of the worst pitching staffs in MLB! Their following series is against the Diamondbacks who aren’t as bad as those first two opponents but they’re still a below-average staff.
Crews opened the season in Triple-A and was recalled in May. Despite playing in just 44 games entering Friday’s action, he scored 25 runs and has six homers, 18 RBI and five stolen bases. That equates to 92 runs, 22 homers, 66 RBI and 18 steals over the course of a full season, and that’s despite his ice-cold start in the first two weeks after he was recalled in May! Not bad for a guy who is likely available for free on your waiver wire.
So, Crews has the pedigree, is performing better and has a fantastic schedule to start the second half. As I wrote two weeks ago, “Snag him now before his overall stat line improves and attracts the attention of more fantasy managers.”
Luke Weaver – RP – Mets – 13%
How about three good reasons to pick up my next recommendation?
First, have you noticed how ‘lights out’ Mets reliever Luke Weaver has been lately? Maybe you wrote him off in April when he gave up eight runs in his first 10 games. However, while you weren’t looking, Weaver gave up exactly zero runs in May and zero again in June! Entering Friday, he has given up just one run (unearned) in his last 24 games! Despite his 7.20 April ERA, Weaver’s overall line includes outstanding ratios (1.89 ERA and 0.84 WHIP) and better than one strikeout per inning (42 Ks in 38 innings).
Second, this outstanding setup reliever is poised to take over the closer role for the Mets if Devin Williams keeps laying eggs on the mound. Williams is sporting a 4.70 ERA and awful 1.63 WHIP so far this year. You don’t need me to tell you that “1.63 WHIP” and “closer” don’t go well together. He was terrible in April, rebounded to have a great June but has relapsed in early July by giving up seven hits and three runs in just 2.1 innings. We saw Williams temporarily lose the closer role with the Yankees last year and the same thing could happen this summer. If so, the Mets could turn to Weaver in the ninth inning.
Although my final reason to consider Weaver isn’t likely, it is possible so I want to mention it. Weaver is in the first year of a two-year contract but the Mets could trade him at the upcoming trade deadline. What if he is traded to a team that views him as a possible closer? While that isn’t likely, if you pick up Weaver and he becomes a closer, you’ll be sitting pretty!
