How’d We Get Here?
Joel Embiid was well on his way to another MVP before suffering a knee injury that basically derailed the entire team’s season. They weren’t going anywhere in the playoffs with Embiid less than full strength and the Sixers decided to turn over half the roster after the latest playoff disappointment. Philly was able to get the best player on the market in Paul George, using the money that was mostly going to Tobias Harris — ask Sixers fans about all that. They poached Caleb Martin from Miami and rounded out the forward group with Guerschon Yabusele, who was incredible in the Olympics. The Sixers picked up Andre Drummond as the new backup center and signed Eric Gordon for some scoring punch on the wing. Oh, they also signed Tyrese Maxey to a $204 million contract, cementing his place right alongside Embiid as a franchise cornerstone. It’s a much different team with a lot more star power and some sneaky good signings at forward, but the Sixers will have to walk the walk in the postseason before they get the benefit of the doubt.
