How’d We Get Here?
After another season where the Hawks were less than the sum of their parts, management decided to make some changes. They waved the white flag on the Dejounte Murray era and flipped him to New Orleans for Dyson Daniels, among other assets. Atlanta chose to move Murray for a lesser return than they could’ve gotten for Trae Young, but it’s a decision to chase the higher-upside outcome given Young’s dynamic offensive play. The Hawks also got some good luck in the lottery, albeit in a “weak” class, and landed Zaccharie Risacher with the No. 1 overall pick. It’s a reset rather than a rebuild, but the Hawks are hoping that a year of development from key young players like Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu plus an overall breath of fresh air with a clear hierarchy in the backcourt will push them forward.
