HR-SB Balance is the Key to Winning Head-to-Head Leagues

  • More times than not, my competitive head-to-head matchups come down to Sunday and the pivotal categories of home runs and steals. I’m not saying that head-to-head battles never come down to runs or RBI on Sunday because they do, but my experience has been that I’m begging for a late Sunday goodie (HR or SB) way more often than I am begging for a run or a rib.

Homers and steals are the rarest and most coveted offensive stats because of the lack of volume. A great season for combined HRs and SBs is 30-30 compared to a 100-100 season in runs and RBI. That increase in volume slightly dilutes the importance of runs and RBI in head-to-head formats versus the absolute necessity for HRs and SBs.

Perhaps the best part of drafting for HR-SB balance is getting two players for the price of one–to a degree. Think about, while managers in your league are relying on tilted players like Brice Turang or Nico Hoerner or Maikel Garcia, you are rocking with double bangers like Jose Altuve, Oneil Cruz or Jazz Chisholm.

The back of the baseball card always matters so let’s rank last year’s best players in combined HRs and SBs–with at least 15 dingers and 15 bags, and at least 40 combined goodies. Call it the 15-15-40 Club. Also, I have included my 2025 HR-SB projections for all of these players.
