How’d We Get Here?
The Nets tried to compete with Mikal Bridges as their centerpiece and a healthy Ben Simmons helping to run point. It didn’t work out. Bridges couldn’t maintain the form he showed in his first-half season with the team, Cam Johnson was constantly injured, Simmons somehow set a new low in games played (non-holdout years) and the team sank like a stone in the standings. Cam Thomas showed he was ready for a larger role and Brooklyn started recouping some futures at the deadline, but it was a slog of a season. The Nets saw the writing on the wall and steered into a clear rebuild by trading Bridges across the river for a haul of draft picks. Brooklyn will be one of the worst teams in the league after offloading its best player — even if he was stretched too thin in that role — and the Nets seem ready for that reality.
