The American League Central has been one of the weakest divisions in MLB the past few years but that changed in 2024. Let’s take a look at how each team performed last year as well as their off-season personnel changes in preparation for the 2025 fantasy season.
Kansas City has been getting better and they have one of baseball’s best players in Bobby Witt, Jr. Cleveland has been decent and they have MLB’s top closer in Emmanual Clase and perennial fantasy stud José Ramírez. And did you hear? Detroit made the playoffs for the first time in a decade! Their new ace and Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal was a Top 5 player. Yes, that means four of last year’s Top 10 players came from this division. Minnesota improved in 2023 but took a small step backward last year. The division’s weakest link by far is Chicago. The White Sox were historically bad last year and lost 121 games.
Here are the final 2024 standings:
Team W L PCT GB Cleveland Guardians 92 69 0.571 - Kansas City Royals 86 76 0.531 6.5 Detroit Tigers 86 76 0.531 6.5 Minnesota Twins 82 80 0.506 10.5 Chicago White Sox 41 121 0.253 51.5 The Tigers and Royals tied for the final two wildcard slots and both won their series, two games to none. The Tigers ousted the Astros (whooda thunk it?) and the Royals knocked out the Orioles. However, both teams lost in the AL Division Series as the Tigers fell to the division-winning Guardians in Game 5 and the Royals lost to the Yankees. Finally, the Guardians appeared to be outclassed by the Yankees in the AL Championship Series, four games to one.
Early odds for the 2025 World Series show Minnesota, Kansas City, Cleveland and Detroit all tightly clustered at +3000 to +4000. Chicago is tied with Miami and Colorado for the worst odds in all of MLB (+50000). Spoiler alert: The White Sox will be fortunate just to climb back to 50 wins and should have little competition for MLB’s worst team in 2025.
