Working the Waiver Wire: June 20

  • We’re approaching the halfway mark already! Maybe you need help because your teams are struggling or maybe you need help withstanding the never-ending injury onslaught. Either way, we have players to consider whether you need pitching assistance or stop-gap hitters.

    * Note: Although all listed roster percentages are from Yahoo, at the time of the writing of this article, most of our waiver wire recommendations are widely available across all major platforms. *

    Alec Bohm – 1B/3B – Phillies – 43%

Alec Bohm is back from the dead.

Bohm was a late-round pick in 12-team drafts this year and his stock fell even further after he hit just .157 in the opening month. A .157 batting average sends guys to the unemployment line, or at least the ‘drop line’ in fantasy baseball. It was easy to dump him and forget about him.

But guess what? As soon as we turned our attention elsewhere, Bohm started hitting better. He still owns a poor .232/.283/.375 slash line for the season but that is weighed down by his horrific April. His batting average rebounded to .277 in May and he is hitting over .300 so far in June.

Will he be a star? No. None of his advanced stats suggest that he will greatly improve. However, if you need a ‘glue guy’ who can help you at 1B or 3B, take another look at Bohm to see if he’s a good fit for your team right now while he is doing well.

    Stephen Kolek – SP – Royals – 36%

Stephen Kolek is a ‘no name’ player (sorry, Stephen, if you’re reading this!!) who has been doing well and may continue to do so in the weeks ahead.

The 29-year-old debuted just two years ago and was recalled from the minors in early May. In his first eight starts this year, Kolek is 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA (though he has a 3.42 xERA) and an excellent 1.03 WHIP. He is averaging over six inning per start so he often qualifies for a win. He already has three starts in which he gave up zero runs.

Two of his next three games are enticing. He faces a weak-hitting Cardinals team on Sunday (act NOW if you want him!) then he is at the White Sox next week followed by the light-hitting Rays thereafter. You might bench him against the white-hot White Sox but he should be an effective streamer against those other two weak teams.

One caution with Kolek – he has a 94-mph fastball that isn’t overpowering. His strikeout rate is just 17.2% so look elsewhere if you’re mainly hunting for Ks.
