Minnesota Vikings Fantasy Football Preview for the 26/27 Season

  • The Vikings had been a dominant fantasy squad for nearly a decade, but last season the wheels didn’t just fall off, the car lit on fire and took out the neighborhood.  They scored 88 points less than two seasons ago and were close to last in nearly every passing metric.  The consensus was that Justin Jefferson was so elite that he was QB proof and that his mere presence on the field propped the offense up.  While that may be true, he’s clearly not infallible as MIN led the league in TOs and any MIN skill player you drafted let you down.  That’s quite a feat.  It was so bad that the MIN brass decided Kyler Murray was the answer after flaming out in ARI.  JJ McCarthy is looking like a bust and while he’s clearly not an elite fantasy QB, he also can’t stay healthy.  It’s impossible to overstate how inept the offense was last season, but finishing 28th in QB FPPG, 26th at RB and 21st at WR begins to paint the picture.  A team with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison should never finish with a two as the first number in the ranking unless it’s 2nd.  The only real question now is do we buy the dip? Murray is by no means a savior and it’s telling that Trey McBride and Michael Wilson took off as soon as he was off the field, so what we will he bring to the table.  The biggest problem was the o-line fell off, ranking 29th last season after being a stalwart of the team for multiple seasons.  Injuries crushed the line last season and getting Christian Darrisaw healthy should do wonders, but it’s not a fix-all.  Murray’s yearly finishes in fantasy points per game among quarterbacks with at least five starts: QB11, QB4, QB4, QB7, QB9, QB12, QB20, so it’s trending in the wrong direction, but a change of scenery has done wonders for several other castoffs.  Murray is going as the QB17, so there is upside and has all the tools to succeed, but consider me skeptical at best.  The biggest issue is what to do about Jefferson.  Widely considered to be the best or 1A WR in football, Jefferson was the WR21 and unplayable down the stretch.  The fact that he only scored two TDs seems impossible, especially since he scored in Week 1.  Jefferson can run every route and can beat you to the house on a slant, but Murray isn’t exactly a deep-threat artist and I worry his style of dink-and-dunk is going to hamper not just Jefferson, but Addison who is an elite deep threat.  The addition of Jauan Jennings only muddies the water, but the good news is, we might never get a cheaper shot at the duo with Jefferson going as the WR6 and Addison as the WR43.
