Working the Waiver Wire: July 30

    This week’s adds are all about power. Both hitting and pitching. We’ll start with the three power bats you need to hear about if you’re looking to boost your teams’ home run output and we’ll finish with a young hurler coming off the IL with increased velo, elite extension and subsequently some strike out upside. Finish strong! The playoffs are nigh!

    Dominic Canzone – OF – Mariners – 18% Rostered

    Canzone has always mashed against right handed pitching, but this year he has actually performed better against lefties. Albeit a small sample size, he has a .286 batting average with four home runs in 27 at-bats versus left handed pitching this year. The reason the limited at-bats versus left handed pitching carry more weight this year, is because a vast majority of them have come recently. Canzone’s performance coupled with the Mariners’ lack of depth in the outfield has lead to Canzone being an everyday player instead of just a strong-side platoon bat. His expected stats and advanced metrics all support Canzone being relevant in even three-outfielder leagues. He should be rostered in significantly more than 18% of leagues.

    Heriberto Hernández – OF – Marlins – 14% Rostered

    Like Canzone, Hernández’ statcast data is leaving fantasy managers dreaming on some big time potential. He provides elite hard hit rates, bat speed, and barrel rates all while being a non-zero in the steals category. Since the beginning of July he’s become a mainstay in the Marlins’ outfield and has been hitting in the middle of the lineup during that time. The Marlins’ offense has been shockingly good this year which will help Hernández contribute more in the runs and RBI categories and while his batting average isn’t anything to write home about, it won’t hurt you either. I like his athleticism, his role on the Marlins, and his dark red savant page. He’s a priority add in any leagues where I need some help in the outfield.
