Working the Waiver Wire: July 23

    At this point in the fantasy season, your add/drop decisions need to be made based on your position in your league’s standings. If you’re head and shoulders above the rest of your league and your playoff berth is practically locked up, then you should be looking ahead and trying to stash a guy coming off the IL that could be an impact player for you when it counts. If you’re not so fortunate and are fighting for your fantasy playoff life, then you need players that will make an impact now and get you to the promised land. In today’s article I’ve tried to cover several different scenarios by listing stash candidates, category specialists, and what some may call a “lottery ticket.”

    Clay Holmes – SP – Mets – 29% Rostered

    Holmes is one of the guys I’m stashing right now in leagues where I’m sitting pretty. He’s set to start his rehab assignment this week as the Mets look to get him up and running in time to possibly trade him before the deadline on August third. He looked good in his last four starts before hitting the IL, throwing 22.2 innings and striking out 26 over that span. On the year he’s made nine starts and recorded a 2.39 ERA, thanks in large part to his elite ground ball rate. While I don’t expect the ERA to finish that low, I think he could deliver a mid-threes ERA and a decent amount of strikeouts from here on out. Also, he is one of the many Mets players that could be traded before the deadline coming up and any team that would be looking to acquire him would probably increase his chances of getting a win whenever he takes the mound.

    Nasim Nuñez – 2B/SS – Nationals – 27% Rostered

    Nuñez is a category specialist, and that category is steals. He leads the league with 37 thus far this season and lately has been contributing in batting average as well. Over the last month of the season Nuñez is hitting .294 to go along with his league leading 9 steals. He will provide you little to no power, and hits at the bottom of the Nat’s lineup so he probably won’t bring many runs or RBI to the table. However, he can make up ground in that single category for you if you’re struggling to catch up in a roto league, or need to boost your production in that category in a head to head league. I like to roster him in head-to-head, daily lineup set leagues where I can keep him on my bench until steals are needed. If I’m going into the weekend and I’m down 2-3 steals, getting Nasim in my lineup gives me a fighting chance at winning that category. If I’m using him in a roto league to try and make up ground in the steals category down the home stretch, I’m making sure his lack of power won’t hurt me more than his speed helps me.
