The hype around Chandler Simpson’s speed might be greater than anything we’ve seen before in the Statcast era, and the Rays fanned those flames with his long awaited call up last week. A shortstop in college, Simpson has experience at second and in the outfield as well, and it’s in the outfield where his generational speed will likely find its home. Generational is not at all an overstatement for Simpson’s wheels, with the former Yellow Jacket registering speeds of 31 ft./s at the minor league level, with times from home to first faster than anything that’s been tracked in the major leagues.
Through a combination of excitement from videos of Simpson beating out first basemen and pitchers to first on infield hits, scoring from 2nd on a sacrifice fly and his incredible minor league stolen base record, including 104 steals last season, his fantasy stock is soaring. Simpson is now owned in 34% of Yahoo leagues, with this number rising on a daily basis; it wouldn’t surprise me if that number is closer to 40% by the time you read this article.
