This is it. The last pickups article of the year.
It has been a true pleasure doing this column once a week this year and hopefully we here at SportsEthos have provided y’all with some benefit throughout the year.
While Sunday is technically the last day of the year, a hurricane pushed back two key games for the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves. They will be playing a double header on Monday with some massive implications for the playoffs. There is currently a three-way tie for two spots that include the Mets and Braves, with the third team being the Arizona Diamondbacks.
My column will focus on players from the Mets and Braves that are at least under 50% rostered on Yahoo that can help you snag a few extra stats to help push you across the finish line.
David Peterson – SP – NYM – 47% Yahoo
He is the probable starter for Sunday’s game the Brewers, per Fangraphs, but he figures to get a start during these crucial game as his last start was missed due to the hurricane.
While his September has not gone well with a 4.15 ERA, there are some key numbers to like about him in these starts.
First, it looks like he was incredibly unlucky with a FIP of 1.73 and a BABIP of .382.He has owns excellent strikeout and walk numbers with a 24.0 strikeout rate and a 4.2% walk rate.
If he were to face the Brewers, he is even more valuable as they have just an 87 wRC+ since the beginning of September against lefties to go with just a .292 wOBA, they also have been striking out at a 25.4% rate.
Now if we learn he is going to face the Braves in the doubleheader, then he is a pure volume play and he should only be used if you are not worried about the ratios (which this late in the year, the negative impact on a ratio might not be enough to lose or gain a point in roto leagues).
League size recommendation: All leagues
