All four of our pickups today are available in at least 82% percent of leagues-including one outfielder owned in 3% of formats, and another utilityman available in 99% of leagues.
A.J. Ewing – 2B/OF – Mets – 18% Rostered
Ewing’s electric major league debut created a ton of buzz around the highly talented 21-year- old, and while he produced to an acceptable level, his passivity at the plate began to cost him as the season progressed. Especially with pitchers more conscious of his abilities, and the rest of the Mets lineup struggling, he faded a tad, before really catching fire in June.
Ewing now holds an .879 OPS in June with three home runs and four steals, and his numbers against righties have been even better. He’s begun to adapt against left-handed pitching too, earning every day reps in center field, and even with the team struggling, his production continues to trend upwards. The power/speed upside of Ewing makes him a must roster in every format, and if the Mets offense gets going with Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto finally healthy together, he could really start to rack up those counting stats down the stretch.
Esteury Ruiz – OF – Marlins – 3% Rostered
Few players have endured as drastic of a drop off in value as Ruiz since 2023, especially given that he still 27 years old, but he’s been given more of a chance this year with the Marlins, and the results so far have been terrific. There’s not a ton behind his bat to suggest his .898 OPS is sustainable, but the crazy stolen base rate is legit, and he’s entering a series at Coors Field in the early week that could see some crazy fantasy production with the hot streak he’s been on.
His fantasy value long-term will be entirely dependent on his playing time, which is now increased by injuries to the Marlins outfield. He’s unlikely to be a great offensive threat, but should steal bases at a prolific rate when he plays, making him a worthwhile streamer for this week in most leagues, and a solid stolen base play in categories leagues as long as he’s playing regularly-expect at least a similar rate to that of Nasim Núñez, from a player who stole 67 bases in his last full season in the majors.
