Three of our four adds this Monday are rostered in 15% of leagues, with the fourth at *0*% (presumably rounded down), and a focus on filling in rosters for a league-wide rash of outfield injuries.
Luis Rengifo – 2B/3B/OF – Padres – 15% Rostered
Rengifo was touted as a preseason change of scenery candidate going from Anaheim to Milwaukee, but his time as a Brewer ended prematurely after posting just a .205 average, .534 OPS and no home runs over 57 games. Since his signing with the Padres, he’s been a revelation, hitting .323/.411/.473 with four homers and three steals in 27 games, securing a regular role in a rejuvenated San Diego lineup.
He’s hit righties a fair bit better than lefties, so owners in 10-12 team leagues may want to utilize Rengifo as a platoon option in daily lineup change leagues, but his production and positional versatility is good enough to make him a lineup regular in 12+ team leagues at the moment, and a solid backup in shallower formats.
Abimelec Ortiz – 1B/OF – Nationals – 15% Rostered
As with many teams that sold at the trade deadline, the Nationals lineup was left with a plethora of opportunity following the departures of Luis Garcia Jr. and Curtis Mead, alongside the oblique injury to James Wood. Chances for some peripheral bench players understandably increased, but so did a strong side platoon opportunity at first base for 24 year old Carlos Beltrán academy graduate Abimelec Ortiz.
Ortiz now hits second against right handed pitching, and he’s raked when given the opportunity. His 1.099 OPS and 5 HR vs RHP is backed up by an incredible 20% barrel rate, .672 xSLG and a .410 xwOBA, all while pulling a third of his batted balls in the air. The plate discipline leaves something to be desired, but Ortiz is a must add regardless in any categories league where home runs are needed, and is a great 10 team option in daily lineup change leagues where he can be benched against LHP.
