Few would’ve expected the Blue Jays to be as good as they’ve been so far in 2025, as they sit in first place, on 89 wins with the best record in the American League. Keeping Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was obviously an enormously consequential decision, but it’s been the rest of the offense that has exceeded expectations, with numerous players stepping up to form one of the most formidable units in baseball.
As they head into the postseason, likely with a first round bye, they’ll need to set up four starting pitchers for the ALDS, and it’s likely that they’d have the flexibility to rest whoever they need to to field their best possible rotation. They’ve got plenty of options as far as quality major league starters go, but a lot of uncertainty as well, with Kevin Gausman’s likely start in game one being the only given on that pitching staff. After Gausman, they’ll choose three starters from four former all stars: Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, José Berríos and Shane Bieber. All four of them have somewhat of a case to start a game; Bassitt has been the most consistent of the four, Berríos has also stayed on the field all season, Scherzer has the best postseason pedigree, and Bieber holds the best numbers over his five starts with the Jays. In case the pool of options wasn’t vast enough, Toronto may have just unleashed it’s highest upside starter yet, who now has the opportunity to go from pitching in low-A ball to the postseason in the same year.
