Expect trouble in the near future. Almost every team other than the ones playing on the West Coast or in domes faces a wet week ahead. This is especially true along and near the East Coast where games in Atlanta, Tampa, Baltimore and Washington may be threatened by numerous showers and thunderstorms. There’s risk of rain in Philly, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago on a few days, too, although the rain chances in those areas aren’t quite as high. Expect a disrupted MLB schedule this weekend and early next week.
Here are the best and worst hitting conditions based on weather forecasts for the next seven days:
TARGETS:
This Weekend’s Best Hitting Environments
- Athletics at Kansas City (Friday-Sunday; temps in the 80s with no rain)
- Toronto at Philadelphia (Friday only; 80 degrees with low rain chances; however, there’s a good chance of rain Saturday then cooler Sunday)
- San Francisco at LA Dodgers (Sunday only; sunny and 80-85 degrees)
Targets for Early Next Week:
- Houston at Athletics (Monday-Thursday; temps “only” 80 on Monday then close to 90 rest of the series)
- Baltimore at Tampa Bay (Monday-Thursday; great combination of heat and humidity but watch out for above average chances of rain each day)
- Pittsburgh at Detroit (Tuesday-Thursday; temps 80-85 degrees with lower rain chances than most other ballparks)
- Colorado at Washington (Wednesday & Thursday only; it might rain Monday and Tuesday but improving Wednesday and Thursday to dry and warm with temps near 85 degrees)
Cool and/or wet weather games are ones to avoid for our hitters, including:
AVOIDS:
This Weekend’s Worst Hitting Environments
- Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs (Friday-Sunday; chilly at just 66-68 degrees each game)
- NY Yankees at Boston (Friday-Sunday; relatively chilly as temps will be in the 60s each day)
- Colorado at Atlanta (Saturday & Sunday; Friday’s game might dodge the raindrops but there is a very high chance of thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday)
- Cleveland at Seattle (Friday-Sunday; just 65-69 degrees each game)
Avoids for Early Next Week:
- Boston at Seattle (Monday-Wednesday; only 65-68 degrees for each game)
- Cleveland at San Francisco (Tuesday-Thursday; MLB’s chilliest series of the next seven days as temps will be around 63 degrees each game)
WEEKLY WEATHER WINNER & LOSERS
- WINNER: Athletics. They play three warm, rain-free games at Kansas City this weekend then host four hot weather games in Sacramento.
- Consider using fringe players like JJ Bleday, Luis Urías, Nick Kurtz, Austin Wynns, Seth Brown and the “other” Max Muncy.
- LOSER: Cleveland Guardians. Temperatures should stay in the 60s for all six of their games in Seattle and San Francisco.
- Consider avoiding fringe players such as Carlos Santana, Kyle Manzardo, Gabriel Arias, Bo Naylor, Nolan Jones and Lane Thomas.
If you’re interested in how weather impacts hitters, here’s an overview:
Weather can play a big role in hitter performance. Refer to my article to see how to use weather forecasts to boost your fantasy team’s performance. In a nutshell:
- 1) avoid hitters in cold weather
- 2) target hitters in warmer weather
- 3) avoid hitters when they are facing gusty inbound winds
- 4) target hitters who face gusty outbound winds
Also, this weekly column focuses on fringe players. I don’t suggest that a slightly worse hitting environment is enough reason to bench your superstars (rainouts, however, are a different story). Instead, use weather information as one of the pieces to help you decide when you’re weighing start/sit decisions, mainly for your non-superstars.
