We’ve got another four pick ups today with a theme of opportunity granted through injury, and those injury replacements have some real potential on their own merit as well.
Cole Carrigg – OF – Rockies – 11% Rostered
Cole Carrigg enjoyed his weekend in Las Vegas as much as any of the Athletics or Rockies hitters, and thankfully for the rookie, he’ll have plenty more opportunity to hit in altitude in his home ballpark. An intriguing prospect with impressive speed and raw power, Carrigg has cut down his previously problematic chase rate to get to the big leagues, and he’s impressed in his limited action thus far.
He projects as an excellent defensive outfielder, which will help him stay in the lineup in the great expanse of Coors Field, and the great returns from his in zone contact rate would suggest that he’s not overmatched at this level. Carrigg’s imminent swing decisions won’t be good enough to tap into the star potential that his bat could produce in the future, but he’s still a worthwhile gamble in 12 team leagues.
Trevor Rogers – SP – Orioles – 50% Rostered
I don’t know for sure that Trevor Rogers is back, but the arrow is pointing up strongly enough that a gamble on his return to form is worth it just about everywhere. His 1.81 ERA from last season was always unsustainable, but he still had strong enough peripherals in the range of an SP2 to believe in a quality follow up season.
This season, his strikeout rate has plummeted, as has his ground ball rate, leading to less consistent swing and miss, and more frequent damage when hitters do connect. A small down tick in velocity could’ve explained some of this, but he’s recently been throwing harder than he has in five years, and the results have improved quickly. A pair of solid outings against the Red Sox and Mariners was followed up by a quality start against the Padres, and while the ratios haven’t been off the charts, he’s got enough potential to grab just about everywhere in case this is legit.
