In the 31 years since their inception, the Colorado Rockies have failed to establish a true ace at the major league level for any sustained period of time. Through a combination of pitching at high altitude, limited funds and poor pitching development, the all-time pitching leaderboards for the Rockies still feature Aaron Cook, Jorge de la Rosa, Ubaldo Jiménez and Germán Márquez.
In 2025, their analytics department has been described as “being from the Stone Age“, yet they’ve happened upon one of baseball‘s most exciting young arms. The Rockies took Chase Dollander ninth overall in the 2023 draft out of Tennessee, betting on the electric velocity to play at a mile above sea level. In the minor leagues, the returns have been tremendously impressive, with Dollander sporting a 2.58 ERA over 24 starts across three levels, striking out 174 batters in 122 innings pitched.
