  • So, 2023, on the pitching front, was a return to normalcy after the dominance of the sticky 2022 season. Comparing 2022 pitching numbers to 2023 is like comparing night and day, they are two completely different things. Only five starters who threw 150 or more innings had an ERA under 3.00 in ‘23; 22 had an ERA under 3.00 in ‘22. In 2023, big league pitchers threw 12 more innings than they did in 2022, striking out 1,031 more batters and only walking 66 more, but they allowed 653 more home runs. That’s more home runs than the Royals, Rockies, Pirates, and Nationals combined to hit in 2023. Every season from 2016 to 2021 looked like 2023 did, making 2022 seem more like the outlier that it was.
