Working the Waiver Wire: August 1

    I have a little bit of everything to offer in my latest waiver wire article. You’re out of luck if you were looking for a catcher recommendation; otherwise, I have an infielder, outfielder, starting pitcher and a possible closer for you to consider adding to your team. The infielder has triple position eligibility, the outfielder is a Top 125 player and the starting pitcher has upcoming rematches against teams that he thoroughly dominated in the past couple weeks. Let’s go!

    Carson Benge – OF – Mets – 46%

    Carson Benge is ‘just’ a rookie but you would hardly know it based on his excellent production. With some pop and lots of speed, he is a Top 125 player in Yahoo (Top 100 per the FanGraphs Player Rater!). Yet, there he is, available in a bit more than half of Yahoo leagues.

    Benge finished July slashing .266/.328/.397 with 11 homers, 55 runs scored and 41 RBI in 106 games. His Top 20% sprint speed has helped him be successful in 17 of 20 stolen base attempts.

    I suppose he could hit the mythical rookie wall at some point but there haven’t been any hints of that happening anytime soon. In fact, July was arguably Benge’s best month yet. He hit .302 with two homers and six stolen bases.

    The Mets have been a huge disappointment this year. They’re currently without Juan Soto (injured list; calf) and it seems they could be hard pressed to score many runs. Yet Benge keeps producing helpful results. He certainly should be universally rostered at this point so check your wire and act accordingly if he happens to be available in your league.
