Pickups of the Day for June 23rd

  • As we close out the weekend and the waiver wire gets thinner, it’s time to look at some deep league options, a big prospect, and an aging veteran who has a good two-start week ahead.  This is the time of the year where it is vital to stay active on the wire.  There aren’t a lot of great options, but while your competitors may not be paying close attention to weekend transactions, you may be able to grab a few extra points or add to some categories in advance of the dog days of summer, which are just around the corner.  Also pay close attention to who is being dropped in your leagues as this is the point where people start to panic and drop under performing players, some of whom may rebound and have a strong second half and you can scoop them up for a small FAAB bid.

    Pete Crow Armstrong – OF – CHC – 4% Yahoo, 61% FanTrax, 24% CBS

This is purely a play on stolen bases in categories leagues.  Crow Armstrong is the Cubs top prospect and regarded as one of the best defensive outfielder prospects in baseball.  That doesn’t help for fantasy purposes, but may allow him to stay in the lineup on a more regular basis.  As a left-handed hitter, he finds himself on the strong side of a platoon while hitting in the bottom third of Chicago’s lineup. That could change in the near term as Mike Tauchman went on the injured list this past Tuesday with a Grade 2 left groin strain, and is expected to be out at least four weeks which should open up more playing time for Crow Armstrong.  His 4.5 BB% and 25.2 K% make him a liability in points leagues.  However his 30.3 sprint speed is in the 100th percentile, meaning he is one of the fastest players in baseball and when he gets on, he is an immediate threat to steal. Chicago is scheduled to face seven right-handed starters over the next eight days, with Wednesday’s game at San Francisco listed as a TBD, so Crow Armstrong may be in line to start the next seven or eight. Crow Armstrong has thirteen steals on the season, with six coming in the last two weeks.
