It’s Tuesday of All Star week, which means no early week waiver pickups, so let’s look at who can help us later this week or down the stretch. This is the time of the year that if you’re mid-pack in the standings, or trailing in a counting stats category that you just can’t seem to close the gap in, that you may need to take a few long shots. Hold them for a week or two. Maybe add them to a trade offer before your league’s deadline, or release them quickly if they don’t pan out. The waiver gets pretty thin this time of year in most leagues of twelve teams or more, so not a lot of reliable veterans to spark your team. So let’s see who we’ve got this week.
Michael Toglia – COL – 1B/OF – 11% Yahoo, 35% FanTrax, 26% CBS
Hitting three home runs on Sunday, and six in the past week will certainly help inflate your numbers going into the All Star break. Overall Toglia has a .197/.224/.503 slash line, which is mostly unplayable, but he does have sixteen home-runs, 27 runs, 34 RBIs and three steals. Since moving into the starting lineup at the beginning of June he has a .230/.301/.556 slash line which is more playable. He also has an extremely low BABIP of .221 during that time, so some positive regression and a corresponding increase in his average and on-base percentage would be expected. His 31.3 K% and 7.8 BB% make him a bad option in points leagues. The 6’5, switch hitting Toglia is hitting between sixth and eighth in the Rockies order but is playing everyday. If you’re not buying Toglia as a long term play, consider this, the Rockies come out of the All Star break with six straight home games before a ten game road trip, so grab him now.
League Size Recommendation: 12-team Roto only leagues. Not recommended in Points leagues.
