Pickups of the Day for July 17th

  • It’s still the All-Star Break, so let’s fill our baseball withdrawal with some low-risk/high-return short-term stashes on starting pitchers that could help you down the stretch and in the playoffs. Let’s go down the list in order of priority/proximity.

    Kodai Senga – SP – NYM – 71% Yahoo, 95% Fantrax

Senga is nearing his return to the major leagues, looking sharp in his latest rehab outing with Triple-A Syracuse. Senga pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three. His performance throughout his rehab starts has been stellar, boasting an 0.90 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 12:4 K ratio over 10 innings pitched between Syracuse and High-A Brooklyn. Senga has expressed confidence, stating he’s been able to do “everything I’ve wanted to do” through three rehab starts. The Mets are considering whether he needs another start in the minors to build up his pitch count to the 75-80 range before rejoining the big-league rotation. His return looks promising, and he could provide a significant boost to fantasy lineups.

Fantasy managers should consider stashing Senga if available, as he’s likely to be a key starter for the Mets down the stretch. His ability to strike out batters and maintain low scoring metrics makes him valuable in all formats, as he was one of the best pitchers in baseball during his rookie year last year. Keep an eye on updates from the Mets’ management about his next steps post-All-Star break as it seems like they are leaning towards activating him sooner rather than later.
