How’d We Get Here?
The Jazz were still tanking last season but made their intentions clear by picking up Jaren Jackson Jr. at the trade deadline — it’s time to go. Lauri Markkanen and Keyonte George were excellent and while the Jazz weren’t looking to get back in the playoffs just yet, there were enough signs for the organization to find the gas pedal again. Jusuf Nurkic was a nice find off the scrap heap and Ace Bailey, despite being reportedly disgruntled about going to Utah in the first place, kicked it into high gear in the second half of the season. The Jazz have not lacked talent in recent seasons but they have lacked the drive; that shouldn’t be a problem this time around. The Lakers came calling with a massive haul of draft picks for Walker Kessler and the Jazz finally found a team that would meet their asking price. They dealt off the oft-injured Kessler and re-signed Nurkic to maintain some continuity in the paint, and while Kessler’s defense will be missed, JJJ is no slouch. Utah added Jaxson Hayes and Josh Okogie in free agency to round out the bench but their big summertime addition was Darryn Peterson, who should start on the wing immediately. That’s a pretty nice parting gift as you wave goodbye to tanking.
