We’ve all been there. You’re sitting at the draft table, counting down the spots left until you pick, looking at the top players left on the board. The player you really want is on the borderline, sixth on the site and you’re seven picks out. Sometimes you get lucky and you feel confident that Your Guy will be there — maybe he’s 13th down the list and you’re up in five picks. Either way, you’ve penciled this player into your plans. They’re the perfect fit. The missing piece that will lead you to glory. This player, right now, is everything. You’ve already started to map out the following round because this player is so clearly aligned to your needs that you have it taken for granted they’ll be on your roster imminently.
Poof, he’s gone. Just like that, one of your competitors has ruined your plans and you’re left to scramble. What we’re here to do today is point out that not all is lost, although it might feel like that in the moment. In the vast majority of cases, you can find diet versions of your player later in the draft. It’s never going to be a one-to-one comparison and sometimes you’ll lose out on one signature skill that makes Your Player special to begin with. There are lots of guards who give you Derrick White-ish production without the blocks, but the blocks are what make White so desirable, right? So no, sometimes you’ll need to pivot. But for the most part, you can get comparable production on a budget.
Sometimes that requires massaging. We’ll need to extrapolate per-minute or per-possession numbers, or turn to future projections when it comes to rookies or players entering uncharted territory. But it is never a total lost cause. While the blocks make White a difference-maker, the rest of his stats are still pretty darn good, and also part of the reason you value him so highly to begin with. Sometimes your discount option comes up quickly and other times you can steal some cheap numbers at the end of the draft, but that Plan B is out there and often, pretty good in their own right.

Matchup 1
| Player | PTS | FG% | FT% | REB | AST | STL | BLK | 3PM | TOs |
| Player A | 15.4 | .638 | .709 | 8.5 | 1.8 | 1.0 | 0.8 | 0.0 | 1.3 |
| Player B | 10.2 | .653 | .703 | 8.4 | 1.7 | 0.8 | 1.3 | 0.0 | 1.0 |
Who are you taking between Player A and Player B? One gives you undeniably more points, but the other offers more punch in blocks on a better mark from the field. If we told you one had a middle-round ADP and the other could be plucked off waivers in some leagues, would that change your choice?
