How’d We Get Here?
The Spurs were clearly a team on the rise but their success last season may have even been a surprise internally, with San Antonio rolling all the way to the Finals. A five-game series loss to the Knicks will sting but it was much, much closer than it looks from the final line as the Spurs held leads deep into multiple contests before falling apart in crunch time. Across the five games, there were maybe eight total minutes that could have swung the series completely in the other direction. Victor Wembanyama lived up to all the hype and then some while the Spurs rode the success of their guard trio — De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper — up the standings. The depth and quality shone through, especially as Fox missed the start of the season. Julian Champagnie worked his way up the depth chart and became a key piece of the starting lineup. Nothing that the Spurs did feels out of reach again and they could get even better as Harper and Carter Bryant continue to improve. That meant a relatively quiet offseason with the Spurs adding Tobias Harris to bolster the forward spots and a quartet of rookies through the draft. Jayden Quaintance offers long-term defensive upside but has a major injury history already, but that’s the kind of bet you can make when you’re positioned where the Spurs are. The core of last year’s rotation remains intact and that is trouble for the rest of the league.
