How’d We Get Here?
The Kings slogged through another lost season but 2025-26 felt a little worse than normal. Beyond watching ex-Kings find success elsewhere, the fans also had to suffer through Sacramento funneling minutes to veterans who don’t impact winning at the expense of younger players who might actually be of use in a couple years’ time. Russell Westbrook ended up monopolizing the backcourt, pushing both Malik Monk and Keon Ellis out of the rotation at times, and that was after the Kings made signing Dennis Schroder their big offseason priority. Zach LaVine was brutal and his season highlight was probably getting into a shouting match with home fans over his effort. Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis both battled significant injuries and were shells of themselves. DeMar DeRozan was his usual self but had no real purpose on a team this bad that would benefit from developmental reps going to other players. A guy they signed in November — Precious Achiuwa — ended up being a full-time starter. Ellis was a hot commodity on the trade market and the Kings ended up dealing him and Schroder for De’Andre Hunter in a deal that both added money and term to the books; Hunter made a two-game cameo with the Kings before getting shut down by eye surgery. It wasn’t all bad as injuries allowed Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell and Nique Clifford to deliver strong play down the stretch, but it shouldn’t have taken that long for the Kings to push them up the depth chart. Sacramento waived DeRozan over the summer and let most of their bottom-roster free agents walk. They drafted Darius Acuff Jr. at the No. 7 spot and are hoping that he, plus a rejuvenated Sabonis and Murray, will show some signs of life for a franchise that feels a million miles away from the Beam Team phenomenon. Most of the roster is on the trade block but neither Sabonis nor LaVine have positive value around the league, so the Kings are stuck for the time being.
