How’d We Get Here?
The Wolves have proven that they’re a team to be taken seriously but injuries caught up to them in the postseason as they fell to the Spurs in the second round. Rather than run it back one more time, Minnesota opted to drastically change the makeup of the roster, pivoting the strength of the team from the backline to the backcourt. Julius Randle was traded to the Nets so the Wolves had space to re-sign Ayo Dosunmu. They drafted a 3-point gunner in Isaiah Evans with the pick that Randle returned. The Wolves then took their biggest swing since the Rudy Gobert trade in acquiring LaMelo Ball from Charlotte for Naz Reid and picks. Ball gives Anthony Edwards an All-Star talent to work with in the backcourt and provides the type of dynamic playmaking and secondary scoring threat that this team has been after for years. Those moves make the backcourt a real source of strength, especially whenever Donte DiVincenzo can return from his Achilles tear, but has left the Wolves perilously thin up front. The Wolves became the latest team to roll the dice on Jonathan Kuminga and have basically promised him a chance to start, not that they have many better options to turn that into a competition. Behind Gobert, Kuminga and Jaden McDaniels, the Wolves are left with Trey Lyles and Joan Beringer as the main backups with a rookie, a sophomore and a two-way contract holder the only cover beyond that. The Wolves have a little more star power and should end up playing a slightly different brand of ball given Ball’s various strengths and weaknesses, but there is immense pressure on the starting five given the state of the bench. It’s a bold gambit for a team that has earned a ton of credibility over the years.
