How’d We Get Here?
The Suns were expected to be a bottom-dweller after trading Kevin Durant away but they were far more competitive than anyone would have guessed. Jordan Ott nailed his first year as a head coach and got the team playing feisty, gritty basketball. After going star-heavy basically blew the franchise up, last season’s Suns felt much more connected as a team and were a lot more enjoyable for the fans to root for. Dillon Brooks helped establish a new culture and although Jalen Green battled significant hamstring injuries that made him a non-factor until the second half of the season, his absence allowed the Suns to uncover Collin Gillespie. Gillespie became a key rotation player and was unquestionably the best PG on the roster by the end of the campaign. Mark Williams was able to stay healthy and both Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale delivered solid seasons of their own as the Suns were able to be more than the sum of their parts. They swapped Allen and O’Neale for Miles Bridges this summer and added to the backcourt with Luke Kennard and Pat Spencer. The rest of their summer was spent retaining key contributors like Brooks, Gillespie, Williams and Jordan Goodwin. The Suns were ahead of the game last year and are out to prove that they’re capable of another step forward.
