How’d We Get Here?
The Sixers have had one of the wilder years in recent memory. They struck gold at the draft lottery and turned a lost season into VJ Edgecombe, who immediately asserted himself as a force to be reckoned with. Tyrese Maxey continued to improve, providing elite fantasy value while forcing observers to question exactly who was the best player on these Sixers. Joel Embiid was healthy, relatively speaking, until an appendectomy on the eve of the playoffs. He was able to return and helped the Sixers complete a miraculous 3-1 series comeback against the favored Celtics, and while the Sixers were trounced by the Knicks in the second round it was a positive end to the season all things considered. The Sixers parted ways with Daryl Morey at the end of the season and the new management team, led by Mike Gansey and Jameer Nelson, wasted no time in reshaping the roster. Philadelphia pulled off a stunner by acquiring Jaylen Brown from the division-rival Celtics, winning the sweepstakes with just draft picks and Paul George’s massive contract. That put them into the next level of title contenders, which made them an attractive — and ultimately the winning — destination for LeBron James. The Sixers now have a star-studded starting five and rounded out the bench with Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The Sixers basically preserved the tippy top tier of the roster, added a future Hall-of-Famer for two years and $8 million, acquired an All-NBA wing and also upgraded the entire bench for good measure. The Sixers have faced plenty of pressure to win in Embiid’s tenure but this will be an entirely new beast.
