How’d We Get Here?
The Magic made waves last summer by sending off a haul of draft picks for Desmond Bane. Despite the clear fit of Bane on the roster, it was a bold move that was supposed to elevate the Magic into real contention. Things didn’t play out that way as Orlando ended up in the Play-In bracket, largely a result of injuries to Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and Anthony Black throughout the season. Guys like Black and Tristan da Silva stepped up repeatedly to give the Magic some legitimate depth but at the end of the day this team is built on the back of its top line players. Wagner returned for the tail end of the campaign but was injured again in the playoffs, throwing an already shaky Orlando offense into the muck. The Magic battled hard for seven games against the top-seeded Pistons but ultimately came up short, with either team looking completely out of sorts for long stretches of time in the series. Both had extended offensive droughts and the Magic’s inability to break through was their undoing. It was a quiet summer roster-wise, with the only move of note being a reunion with former All-Star and franchise great Nikola Vucevic. The big move was made behind the bench as Orlando dismissed Jamahl Mosley and hired Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney. He was the architect of a great defensive unit and the hope is that a fresh voice can get the most out of a talented roster that felt like less than the sum of its parts last year.
