Working the Waiver Wire: July 27

    Two-two start pitchers headline our waiver wire additions for this week, with a fantasy ace to add back from injury, and a top prospect shortstop only rostered in eight percent of leagues.

    Christian Scott – SP – Mets – 27% Rostered

    Scott’s success upon his return from Tommy John surgery isn’t a surprise to those that followed him closely before his injury, but a pick up in velocity since his recovery has raised the ceiling of what some analysts previously believed was a middle of the rotation starter. His command isn’t quite as good as it was pre-surgery, which is to be expected, but he’s getting more swing and miss on his entire repertoire, and his command has improved as the season has gone along.

    Annoyingly for fantasy purposes, he’s not been as efficient as a byproduct of that deteriorated command, making him consistently fall short of quality start points bonuses, but the strikeout to walk ratio and overall damage limitation is strong enough to make him a worthwhile starter to roster in 10 team leagues, and 8 team categories formats. This week, he’s worth picking up everywhere as a two start pitcher, and he can be held everywhere as long as his results continue to hold up. Consider Scott a dynasty buy-low as his command continues to improve, and the strikeout rate continues to climb.

    Dean Kremer – SP – Orioles – 9% Rostered

    Kramer hasn’t exactly been a model of consistency over the past few years, but the volume that he offers is much better than most widely available waiver wire options. He’s generally been used as a streamer, combining some spectacular starts with a smattering of meltdowns, and this year has more or less presented the same theme. Having been the subject of some trade rumors, he could find himself on a new team in the next week, but either way, his fantasy intrigue largely comes from the volume.

    His last start against the Red Sox was emblematic of this trend, allowing six runs on eight hits, but completing six innings with five strikeouts as well. His ratios are OK for 12-14 team leagues, but he becomes an asset for categories leagues where you’ve already punted ERA, giving you solid counting stats at the cost of ratios. Kremer enters a favorable two start week against the Tigers and Phillies, so he’ll be viable in eight team leagues as a streamer as long as he spends the rest of the week as an Oriole, but he doesn’t have the sticking power of Scott.
