Now officially a month into the season, we’re starting to get a real sense of where teams and players stand. The East standings feature Cleveland and New York in home court positions as we all expected, but they both trail Detroit and Toronto. The Lakers managed to go 10-4 without LeBron James and look like a real threat despite OKC and Denver remaining the class of the conference. Remember that for every team that’s sitting higher than expected, it means there’s another team unsatisfied at the bottom of the ladder.
We’ll get into the fantasy impact of the standings later on — and there’s still lots of time for things to change — but first, a check on the injury report and a rundown of next week’s schedule.
Injuries to Watch
Last week was particularly bad in terms of injuries to key fantasy players; Victor Wembanyama (calf), Ja Morant (calf), OG Anunoby (left hamstring) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (groin) are out for at least a couple of weeks while Domantas Sabonis (left knee) is likely looking at a month or more on the sidelines. Anthony Davis (left calf) is out for another 10 days and will be shelved until Mavs ownership is confident that he won’t be tearing his Achilles. Even Cooper Flagg missed a game!
Assuming that Bobby Portis and Vince Williams have been picked up in your leagues already, we can move on to lighter things.
And it wasn’t all bad, as Jalen Brunson, Coby White, Zion Williamson, most of the important Pistons and of course LeBron James were all able to return to action. But still, it was another rough week for injuries.
Among the guys who aren’t out for a set period of time, there’s quite a bit for fantasy GMs to monitor.
Jrue Holiday and Shaedon Sharpe have both been banged up of late with calf problems, which has allowed Jerami Grant to start.
Grayson Allen has missed time with a quad contusion, and hopefully he can hit the ground running when he’s back.
Jaden McDaniels is dealing with a wrist injury but there’s no fantasy fallout if he’s hurt because the Wolves just start Mike Conley.
Tre Jones has been hurt since Coby White made his season debut and we’re eager to see how all the pieces fit together now that the Bulls might have everyone available to them.
Darius Garland is close to returning after aggravating his toe injury last week, and fantasy GMs should be thankful that he’s not going to miss a huge chunk of time.
The surging Pistons got Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson back this week and may soon have Tobias Harris to join them.
Alex Sarr missed a game with a toe problem but that feels day-to-day for now.
Jaren Jackson Jr. has been on the injury report lately and with things spiraling in Memphis you can’t help but think about the possibility that he isn’t as available as you’d hope.
