Friday was a big night for the buy-low guys out there.
It turns out that Desmond Bane did not just forget how to hoop! He had 22 points, six rebounds, seven assists, one steal, two blocks and two 3-pointers while going 8-of-15 from the field. A few of his buckets were generated off simple actions in which Orlando’s best players made basic passes to punish the defense for over-committing to one player. It’s not hard stuff; Bane is good and his teammates are talented.
Myles Turner dropped 23 points, his most in a Bucks uniform. That came with eight rebounds, four steals, a block and four 3-pointers. His scoring has been weak but the triples and blocks are still showing up. It’s a little surprising given how the rest of the Bucks won’t be counted on to score, but Turner has always been fine this year. The panic should subside quickly so hopefully you got your offers out in the first week of the season.
Ja Morant may not have found his joy, but he found a group playing with even less joy in the Mavericks. Morant had a double-double by halftime and waltzed his way to 21 points, five rebounds, 13 assists and three steals in 32 minutes. He shot it poorly from the field but at least he looked engaged, and maybe a win will help get everyone’s mojo back.
Immanuel Quickley had his best game of the year with 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and three 3-pointers on 5-of-11 shooting. He was stepping into his shots with confidence and even mixed in a few heat checks. He was shooting .279 from distance entering last night and improvement was coming even if Quickley continued to play poorly. Obviously you’d like him to just play well outright, and last night was a step in that direction.
Now it’s your turn, Cameron Johnson.
Top Pickups
This is the “general must-add” section regardless of the slate. If these players are being overlooked and remain chilling on the waiver wire, consider adding them to your squad.
Cason Wallace
Wallace is only rostered in 33% of Yahoo leagues despite elite steals numbers and a secure starting spot for the league’s best team. Seems weird. If Wallace is available in your league, go get him without a second thought. Last night he shot 6-of-8 from the field to score 15 points with two rebounds, two assists, a steal and three 3-pointers. You’re going to get a great baseline of steals and 3-pointers with the occasional burst of extra stats like that and he’s going to get 25-plus minutes every night. There’s no reason Wallace should be available in any competitive league.
