Is Trevor Rogers an Ace?

  • The Orioles front office caught a ton of flack for their actions at the 2024 trade deadline, with no move more criticized than the acquisition of Trevor Rogers from the Miami Marlins for Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby. The deal was viewed as an overpay at the time, primarily due to Rogers’ dismal results in 2024, and poor performances in orange followed by a wildcard round exit amplified the heat on Mike Elias and Co. Furthering the damage, Stowers has played like a star for much of this season, representing the Marlins at the All-Star Game and owning an OPS of .912; numbers that would make him the Orioles best hitter right now, if he were healthy.

Baltimore knew the price for Rogers was heavy, but believed in the potential he showed as a rookie, justifying the decision to deal from their glut of position player prospects. Despite the coaching and analytics staff’s best efforts, he struggled after the deadline to the tune of a 7.11 ERA, before ultimately being demoted to the minor leagues for the remainder of the season.

His start to 2025 was delayed by a knee injury, and he wouldn’t make his debut until May 24, when the Orioles were already falling out of the playoff race. The team would send him down the next day despite 6.1 scoreless innings, and he wouldn’t be recalled until June 18, when the Orioles hopes of competing had vanished. At this point, the Rogers trade, along with the inaction of the Orioles front office in free agency had fans clamoring for radical action, with the common sentiment being that the organization wasted a generation of promising young players.

In 2025, Rogers has been nothing short of spectacular for the last place Orioles, posting a 1.51 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over 15 starts. His composite peripherals are all up around the board, but it’s clear that this did not happen by accident when examining his pitch level data.
