How’d We Get Here?
It was another year of significant injury troubles for the Pelicans, who had a ton of talent on paper but sunk to the bottom of the standings as their players dropped like flies. Brandon Ingram missed 58 games with an ankle sprain and got traded. Trey Murphy missed 29 games. Zion Williamson missed 52 games. Herb Jones missed 62. Dejounte Murray, who was supposed to freshen everything up, tore his Achilles. The Pelicans traded CJ McCollum away over the summer in what appeared to be a buy-high move on Jordan Poole and then drafted Jeremiah Fears at No. 7, adding two score-first guards while leaving the team light on true playmakers until Murray returns. New Orleans also dedicated a lot of resources to rounding out the center group, trading for first-round big man Derik Queen and then signing Kevon Looney away from the Warriors. The Pelicans now have three non-shooting centers to pair with Williamson and nobody who can reliably set the table. New management in New Orleans seems to have a vision, but the first impression isn’t a strong one.
