How’d We Get Here?
The Celtics were gunning for another championship but their 3-point barrage let them down in the second round of the playoffs, and their season was unofficially ended when Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles. With a gargantuan tax bill coming, it was rumored that the Celtics were looking to move out salary — and that was even if they had won again. With Tatum set to miss the entire 2025-26 season, the sell-off was on. The Celtics traded out Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis while allowing Al Horford to walk in free agency. They brough back Anfernee Simons but he was the only notable addition; the rest of Boston’s adds were upside bets on depth players, though two of those guys are in the running to start at center. The Celtics were brutally realistic about their chances sans Tatum and it’ll be the first time in a long time that Boston isn’t a real contender.
