Today, we are covering bats only–from those who should be added in shallow leagues, to one who should be picked up in deeper formats. For our purposes, we are targeting three rookies–at least one of which is a priority add–and a vet. So, with that being said, enough with the introductions. Let’s dive in!
Luke Keaschall – 1B,2B,OF – MIN – 48% Yahoo
Keaschall was just mentioned in Friday’s edition of Working the Waiver Wire, but I believe he is a priority add in shallow formats, especially points leagues, so I am highlighting him here again. “What was the rookie’s latest heroic feat?” you might ask. Good question! A two-run walk-off homer in extras on Sunday against the Royals, that’s what. Are you not entertained?! In the contest, Keaschall was 3-for-5 with the home run and a double. The homer was the second of his career.
The 22-year-old, who had been out since April with a fractured forearm, has begun his MLB career on a scorcher, slashing a ridiculous .415/.500/.707 with the two home runs and five stolen bases in 48 plate appearances over his first 12 games. The youngster has hit safely in 11 of those 12 games, and should be added while he’s hot, as his roster percentage will only continue to grow.
Even after the inevitable cool down, I contend that the young infielder should still hold plenty of fantasy appeal. While he is not a power hitter, sporting a below-average 35.3% hard-hit rate and 8.8% barrel rate so far, he has shown some great plate discipline, posting an impressive 4.7% strikeout rate, 11.6% walk rate, 17.9% chase rate and 13.6% whiff rate. Despite the lack of power, Keaschall’s strong hit tool should make him in asset in fantasy, particularly in points leagues, for the remainder of this season and beyond.
