Paul’s Call to the ‘Pen: April 22

  • Now that we have a couple of weeks in the books, we are starting to see the trends and usage of arms in these ‘pens, though there are still plenty of questions that remain unanswered.

Who will fill the holds void in Kansas City with no Hunter Harvey or Lucas Erceg? Justin Martinez season begins with no A.J. Puk? Are we worried about Devin Williams? Is Detroit any clearer? How is Ryan Pressly doing in Chicago? We still don’t care about the White Sox (spoiler… no)?

I got your answers in my third installment of Paul’s Call to the ‘Pen!

The closer’s I will label in the following tiers (I’ve added a fourth tier):

Strong – they are definitely the closer.
Probably – they look to be the closer, for now.
Weak – I’m not betting on them to be the closer in the long-term
Committee – We just don’t know who will get the ball in the ninth. Shrug.

    Alright, let’s get into it!

NOTE; All stats are for games played through April 21.

    Astros

Closer – Josh Hader – Strong

Hader got all three saves for the Astros this past week.

He now has six saves with a 0.82 ERA. He’s elite. He is the closer.

    Holds

Bryan Abreu got three holds, Bryan King got two holds while Steven Okert got one.

He doesn’t pitch full innings as a lefty, King does have five holds and is pitching well. He can be considered in deep leagues.

Okert is a lefty but has 11.0 innings pitched in nine outings. But he has just two holds. He is just a dart throw.

Abreu should be rosterd everywhere that counts holds and King is a deep league play.
