I have a definite love-hate relationship when it comes to ranking prospects. For one, I am not a scout, so I rely on someone else’s word plus my own baseball knowledge to determine skill. Two, it is impossible to watch every single top prospect more than once or twice a year with a full time job, a wife and two kids. Three, no matter how I rank them, someone always has a problem with them. And four, when I am way off from group think with someone, I tend to doubt myself and then correct it, even if I don’t really believe it, though I am working on that.
All that being said, I am very happy with the top 100 to kick off draft season. This is a top 100 of NON-DEBUTED prospects, so no Dylan Crews, Jackson Jobe, Jasson Dominguez, etc. When I do these lists, I am concerned with the kids who have yet to face big league pitching and finding the value in those that make their way onto the back end of the top 100, not the front end. Though, there is a ton of value in the front end right now, a front end that will look a lot different by the time we are one month into the season, especially since anywhere from six to eight of the top 25 could be on big league rosters by the time May starts.
You might notice, once you get to the 60’s, a run of seven catchers over eleven spots. They may not all stay behind the plate, but the bats will play at a corner or DH. There is a lot of talent behind the dish, even if some of it was too aggressively promoted *cough* Ethan Salas *cough*. I used to stay away from investing in young catchers who hit better than they play defense, but in today’s environment, those kids get moved to first base in the big leagues and then get to be the three true outcomes hitters they are destined to be.
I’ll update these throughout the season, as players are called up to the big leagues, after the draft, at the end of the season and in between, but we’ll let you know every time, shouting it out on Twitter and Bluesky.
I’ve put innumerable hours into the rankings, so please enjoy. If you agree, disagree or just want to talk prospects (or fantasy baseball in general), hit me up on X or Bluesky @akfantasybb.
