Sports Ethos First-Half Fantasy Baseball All-Star Prospects

  • The MLB All-Star break isn’t just a time to celebrate the big league superstars who have carried our fantasy baseball teams throughout the first half of the season.

It’s also a time to brag about the future of the game. MLB does so by having the MiLB Futures Game and the First-Year Players Draft as part of the big league festivities. And we’ve decided to do so by sharing our First Half Fantasy All-Star Prospects.

I locked every member of our fantasy baseball staff in a very small room and yelled failed prospect names at them until they all produced a fantasy all-star prospect at every position (and two pitchers). The following is the fruits of their labor.

    Catcher

Jeff Clowers (Follow: @EthosJeff) – Adrian Del Castillo – Once again, allow me to give a quick spiel on my thought process for All Star prospects. Unlike MLB players, there’s much less of a track record to fall back on for up and coming specs – which means things like scouting, production (age versus level) and name value all come into play here, with the first two factoring most. When all else is equal, I prefer to highlight the more under-appreciated player.

And in my opinion, few are more under-appreciated than Arizona’s Adrian Del Castillo. Prior to 2024, Del Castillo had a grand total of 22 home runs over three seasons and five levels. But he’s come into this year as a new man, swatting 17 more across 80 games at Triple-A and raising his wRC+ to 144 – strong numbers for any hitter, let alone a 24-year-old catcher.

Doug Reid (@Doug_Reid34) – Ben Rice – He’s not a catcher in New York, but he qualifies there. Instead he’s a lead off hitter, that bats left, with a short porch in rightfield of Yankee Stadium, and oh yeah, he has guys name Judge and Soto hitting behind him.
