Pickups of the Day for June 14th

  • At this point in the season, you’ve scoured everywhere. Whether it’s underperforming players, minor league prospects or even those currently on the Injured List, you’ve combed through hundreds upon hundreds of names while trying to find viable options that can be plugged into your fantasy lineup.

But have you looked to the barren, ice-blasted territory past the 49th parallel? Yes… I’m talking about the Great White North – home to the oft overlooked Blue Jays.

Today’s pickups feature three of Toronto’s finest – plus one Cubs prospect inching closer to promotion, so our neighbours (yes, that’s how it’s actually spelled!) to the south don’t feel left out.

Hop off your polar bear and let’s going! We’ve got igloos and championship fantasy teams to build!

    Yimi Garcia – RP – TOR – 52% Yahoo, 45% CBS

First up on today’s sojourn north of the border is a quick ride on the closer carousel. No matter the size of your league, there’s always a high demand for closers, even if they’re only holding the role for a short period of time – and especially if they have elite ratios.

Garcia certainly has the latter and he currently holds the the closer position for the Jays with Jordan Romano on the shelf with a forearm injury. Since Romano’s injury, Garcia has racked up three saves and one hold in seven appearances, with 12 strikeouts over his 7.1 innings. On the year, Garcia now sits with an ERA of 1.98, which probably undersells just how dominant he’s actually been as the righty holds 99th percentile rates in xERA (1.97), xBA (.154) and K% (36.6%).

Romano is apparently nearing a return, as he resumed throwing this past Monday, and he is expected to return to his usual 9th inning role once he does. However, forearm injuries are notoriously difficult to manage and Romano’s struggles pre-injury (6.59 ERA) could lead to either another absence or potentially a demotion to a setup role until he rights the ship. Either way, Garcia would stand to benefit from a clearer path to saves – and even if he doesn’t, he can help by contributing in ERA, WHIP and Strikeouts.
