Key Storylines

The last time Joel Embiid stepped on the hardwood, he amassed 70 points, 18 rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block on 59% from the field and 92% from the line, with only one three-pointer. Prior to Monday night, only eight other players had scored 70 points. That same night, Karl-Anthony Towns had scored 62 points. The difference between what these two ultra-talented bigs did was that Embiid played within the flow of the offense and just dominated the court like the Godzilla-like beast he is, whereas KAT absorbed possessions, got gassed, and ultimately annoyed Wolves head coach, Chris Finch, enough that he got bench in the fourth quarter. This is the reason why people laugh at the Troel’s crotch chops and unhinged flails equally and people, including Embiid himself, mostly just roll their eyes at KAT. Anyway, Big Daddy Process has been averaging 40 PPG for as long as I can remember and he seems like he doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon. So long as he plays the new mandated amount of games to win postseason awards, I don’t see how he doesn’t win his second consecutive MVP.

The Pacers finally made their big swing for Pascal Siakam, but all they had to include was Bruce “Carhartt Cowboy” Brown and a collection of three first-round picks, two of which nobody in the league even seems to value very much. This means there is a strong chance they could aim even higher at the trade deadline, this upcoming offseason, and/or beyond. Unfortunately, Tyrese Haliburton had been out with a hammy strain due to an accidental Olympic split he did on a slippery floor, and like often happens in this league, he returned too soon from this sort of injury and reaggravated it after one superb performance. That means we’ll have to wait for the dynamic, fast-paced pairing we were promised for the foreseeable future. This also means if TJ McConnell is still somehow on your waiver wire, you should absolutely pick him up.

Stream of the Game

Nicolas Batum is widely available and he’s been consistently providing modest but comprehensive and helpful backend lines. If Rick Carlisle had decided to continue giving the Pacers’ 2023 lottery pick, Jarace Walker, minutes, he’d be a solid option, as he was really starting to string together a few solid performances in limited action. Since the aforementioned McConnell has likely already been snagged, give Andrew Nembhard a go.

Key Storylines

The Utah Jazz have been confounding opposing teams and the national media ever since they got over their initial rocky start to the season. Will Hardy is doing another bang-up job, working magic with lineups and rotations and executing strategies with ease. Collin Sexton and John Collins both have new leases on life, each playing excellent team basketball and putting up strong individual stats. Whether they stay or go, their reputations have definitely boosted as a result of their recent play. Defensive standout, Walker Kessler, has settled into a nice backup role and has regulated things for himself, providing fantasy managers with a steady flow of blocks and boards. Jordan Clarkson is doing his usual hot-and-cold routine, eliciting audible gasps from fans — sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. And Lauri Markkanen is making a case for back-to-back All-Star selections. All of this is leading people to wonder whether they’ll be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. Don’t let fear creep in and panic trade anyone; just ride with the rhythms of the Hardy Boys for now.

The Wizards are perhaps the only team I truly do not want to watch on League Pass. At least the Hornets have Eric Collins to provide some entertainment while calling games. The Wizards are just such a brutal viewing experience. Individually, they have plenty of watchable guys: Deni Avdija, Bilal Coulibaly, Daniel Gafford, Tyus Jones, Kyle Kuzma; collectively, though, it’s about as appetizing as a Garbage Plate. Have you ever been to Rochester? Look it up. The only people who can’t wait for this front office to blow up this disaster squad more than me are the faithful fans of our nation’s capital who have put up with quite a load of crap for decades now.
