Pickups of the Day for September 17th

  • If you are still reading this article it means you are likely still competing in your MLB fantasy season.  With less than two weeks left in the season, or less is points leagues, the waiver wire is very thin.  You should be looking at what categories you can make marginal gains in, like a few steals, wins or strikeouts.  So let’s take a look at a few under the radar players the rest of your league is sleeping on.

    Griffin Canning -SP – LAA – 10% Yahoo, 49% FanTrax, 18% CBS

Canning comes into the week having thrown 156.1 innings and has a 5.35 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.74 K/9.  All of those are well below average numbers so why am I recommending him?  Well, it’s pretty simple, he lines up for three starts over the remainder of the season, at home tonight (Tues) and next Tuesday on the road, both against the Chicago White Sox and potentially the last game of the season at home against Texas.  Canning has been very inconsistent this season as seen in his last eleven starts where he has allowed two earned runs or less in five of those games, but also allowed six or more earned runs in four games.  However, at this stage of the season if you are looking for wins and some strikeouts, his matchups against the White Sox make him worthy of a pickup.  The White Sox are the worst hitting team in baseball with a 75 wRC+ overall, so 25% worse then average and 7% below the next worst team.  Against right-handed pitching they have a 76 wRC+, which is also the worst in baseball.  Over the last month Chicago is even worse, with a 65 wRC+.  Canning should be picked up in all formats if you need pitching stats.
