Pickups of the Day for September 4th

  • Only the strong remain as we get deeper into the fantasy playoffs and final stretch run in roto leagues:

    Reid Detmers – LHP – LAA – 10% Yahoo, 63% Fantrax

Reid Detmers returned to the majors with a performance that reminded everyone of his potential. In his latest outing against the formidable Dodgers lineup, Detmers went 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 10 and walking 2. This showing highlights his ability to deliver high strikeout numbers, evidenced by an impressive 30.1% whiff rate that nudges into the near elite category albeit a small sample size.Despite a challenging season in Triple-A, where he posted a 5.54 ERA over 78 innings, Detmers maintained a solid 29.4% strikeout rate, suggesting that his ability to miss bats remains intact. His major league ERA this year stands at 5.87 over 69 innings, which is discouraging, but his 3.68 xERA and high strikeout numbers indicate underlying skills that could lead to better results. Detmers’ recent adjustments, especially to his slider, which he reworked to regain its effectiveness, show a commitment to improvement. His performance against the Dodgers, managing 18 swinging strikes, with significant contributions from his fastball and slider, demonstrates his potential upside.

While there’s understandable skepticism given his past inconsistencies, Detmers, at only 25 years old, still has the potential for a breakout. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues or those in need of strikeouts might consider taking a flier on him, especially given his low rostering percentage on Yahoo. He offers the kind of high-upside play that could pay off handsomely for you in the playoffs this year.
