Pickups of the Day for July 23rd

  • We’re back to a regular schedule of full days on Tuesday and Wednesday on the diamond. As August nears, the waiver wire always gets thin, but injuries rarely slow so you need to find replacements somehow. This is also a point in the fantasy baseball season where managers start to lose interest as their team is struggling, so they may not be combing the wire looking for help, which provides opportunities for those of us who are still active. Most MLB teams have played around 100 games which means nearly 40% of the season remains, so there is plenty of time to make up ground in fantasy baseball. So lets take a look at a few under the radar players that can help you short term, and maybe for the rest of the season.

    Victor Robles – OF – SEA – 6%, 18% FanTrax, 6% CBS

The definition of a post-hype sleeper. The Fantasy community has been long expecting the 27-year old Robles to break out, but for a variety of reasons it hasn’t happened. The Washington Nationals released him and the Mariners decided to take a chance and signed him to a major league contract on June 4th. Since then he has appeared in twenty-one of the Mariners thirty-nine games and hit .390, with a .468 OBP and .585 SLG%, plus seven steals.  While those stats are impressive, it was thought that he was a depth piece in Seattle, more of a fourth outfielder. However, he has heated up lately and with Julio Rodriguez injuring his ankle on Saturday, Robles may get more time in the Mariners lineup going forward. Robles is a bit of a risk, but Seattle’s offence has struggled all season and needs a spark anyway it can get it, so they may lean on Robles while he is hit.

League size recommendation: 12-team leagues or deeper
