Pickups of the Day for September 3rd

  • The final month of the MLB season is upon us and it may be time to look to punt a category and focus on small gains in a few others that will allow you to move up the standings.  With most of the big name minor leaguers being called up already, it’s time for a deep dive into your waiver wire bin to find some bargains, so here we go!

    Cade Povich – SP – BAL – 3% Yahoo, 32 % FanTrax, 10% CBS

Cade Povich has started eleven games this season and has a 6.58 ERA and 1.731 WHIP.  Yes, you read that correctly, the twenty-four year old lefty has not been good this season.  He does have an xERA of 4.44 so has been a victim of some bad luck.  On the positive side he is in the 73rd percentile in average exit velocity and 79th percentile in hard-hit percentage.  So why am I recommending him?  First, he starts on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, who have lost eleven straight games, fifteen of their last sixteen and are 31-108 on the season.  The White Sox are also the worst hitting team against left-handed pitchers with a wRC+ of 72, so 28% worse than the MLB average.   The second reason is that Povich is a left-handed pitcher and this game is at Camden Yards in Baltimore, which has a very deep left field wall so right handed hitters are challenged to hit for power.  Add to that, the White Sox have a .325 slugging percentage against left-handed pitchers, which is not only the worst in baseball, but is almost 10% worse than the next worst team.  Povich is a risky play but has only thrown 52.0 innings this season and has gone over 84 pitches in ten of his eleven starts, so the Orioles aren’t likely to limit his outing if he is pitching well.  If you are in need of wins, or maybe a few strikeouts, Povich is a good play on Tuesday.
