Paul’s Fantasy Baseball FAAB Recommendations – Week 19

  • Note on the FAAB recommendations – We are at a point where some of you might be real low on FAAB. So if you really want some of the players I recommend, I would saw a good rule of them is to make sure you have roughly $30-50 left over the rest of the year and bid accordingly. That way you have some leftover for potential injury replacements to finish off the year. But now is also not the time to hoard your FAAB (exception being H2H managers who are locked into a playoff spot).

    In order of roster% –

    12-TEAM LEAGUES (ROSTER%)

P Clay Holmes – CHC – 42% (Yahoo) – Holmes roster% has gone up this week as he got dealt to the leagues best defense in the Cubs. No, his first start back after being on the IL since mid-May did not go well. But he did have a 63% srike% and the velocity on his arsenals was pretty much where it needed to be. But his extreme ground ball approach combined with that defense should help with the ratios and he has a little more swing and miss than you may think with two 30%+ whiff% offereing. BID – 8-15%

SS George Lombard Jr. – NYY – 45% (Yahoo) – He is the kind of prospect I like to actually spend a little FAAB. He isn’t some super high-risk , high-reward kind of dude like Spencer Jones or Esmerlyn Valdez. He has maintained solid hit-tool metrics throughout the minors and he had a 92.5 MPH avgEV and a 47.7% hard-hit rate in AAA this year. He doesn’t have a ground ball problem either and he is a plus defender. He is off to a hot start as I wouldn’t be too shy with the FAAB. BID – 15-20%

P Luke Weaver (29% Yahoo), Mason Montgomery (9%) – PIT – prior to the deadline, this was looking like Montgomery’s job but in comes Weaver and I think this will be Weaver’s job for the taking. He has a much better walk rate and while his swing and miss isn’t on Montgomery’s level, Weaver’s swing and miss is still great and he has a longer track record. If the Pirates FINALLY get into a save situation, adjust your bids accordingly. But even if it is Montgomery, I still prefer Weaver long term, BID – Weaver – 4-8% (more if he gets the save), Montgomery – 2-4% (ditto).

P Jackson Jobe – DET – 64% – Remember him? Jobe was once thought of as one of, if not the top pitching prospect in baseball before injuries derailed him. In his first start back he saw well into the upper-90s with his fastball, hitting 100+. In fact, his velocity is up across the board from before his surgery. He walked only one batter with four Ks in 5.1 innings as he allowed  just one hit and no runs. Pitching can be in short supply in a lot of leagues right now and Jobe has the upside to be real impact arm – BID – 6-12%

SS Kaelen Culpepper  – MIN – 56% – He is a lot like Lombard in terms of having a great hit tool and he turned in a solid hard-hit metrics in AAA with a 45.5% hard-hit rate. He corrected his ground ball rate down to 43.9% this year and that is wonderful to see. Again, he is a prospect with a much better floor than others and that makes me really want him. Lombard is the priority but Culpepper is like the 1B to Lombard 1A. BID – 12-18%
