The playoffs are a joy to watch, but that doesn’t mean my dynasty brain turns off! If anything, this is the time to start jotting down some names for either buy-low or sell-high targets whenever your league opens for trading. The NBA Draft, trades, and free agency always brings plenty of chaos and changes, so getting out ahead of some of these changes in team contexts can be some of the best ways to capitalize on new player values before they even emerge. Below I’ll hit on some players who I anticipate will find themselves in new team situations, as well as identity some classic buy-low and sell-high options based on some outlier metrics.
Buy-Lows
Jaylen Brown
Brown’s scoring dipped for the second consecutive season down to 22.3 points a game. As he approaches 30, you would think now is the not buy into Brown’s stock. However, I don’t fully buy the scoring dip. Brown’s field-goal percentage dipped down to 46.3%, his lowest mark in that area since his rookie season back in the 2016-17 season. Let’s take a further look at Brown’s two-point field goal percentage, which fell to 52.9%. That is his lowest figure since the 2018-19 season. It’s a little too early to say Brown has hit some aging cliff, so I would expect Brown’s percentage and points to bounce back.
One statistical positive is that Brown averaged a career-high in assists with 4.5 a game, buoying some future optimism even if his scoring doesn’t fully recover. Brown just needs to maintain this gain with a modest uptick in points to return to his fantasy heights approaching the top-50. I can easily see the Jaylen Brown manager in your dynasty league being frustrated, and there should be an opportunity to swoop him for a discount.
Onyeka Okongwu
Okongwu probably was too good down the stretch to be consider that much of a true “buy-low” anymore. His thrust into the starting lineup though yielded such strong results that he bears mention. Since Okongwu was inserted as a starter on January 20th, he averaged 15.0 points on 58.1% from the field, 10.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.9 blocks and nearly a triple per game in 31.2 minutes a game.
Previous incumbent Clint Capela is a free agent, and it looks clear Okongwu will proceed forward as the clear-cut starting center even if Capela is brought back into the fold. We know minutes and opportunity are king in fantasy, and Okongwu should have that in spades. There is still room for his defensive game or shot to advance further, so there may be even more fantasy juice to squeeze out of Okongwu.
